[Road Less Traveled] Sulaiman Bay: A Gleam of Hope for the Bay

[Road Less Traveled]
Teluk Sulaiman: Secercah Harapan untuk Sang Teluk

Sunrise at the hut
When was the last time you witnessed this moment?

I kept my sight straight to the road. Steering the handlebars to the left, to the right frequently. Not because the winding road, but in order to evade the obstacles that scattered almost along the main road of Biduk-Biduk.

A short ride trip could become more difficult when I had to evade dozens of cow dungs that barely to be seen. It surely a common thing that we can find cows roam freely in some certain villages, so Biduk-Biduk counted in.

Previous story: [Road Less Traveled] Biduk-Biduk: Borneo's Nose Tip Paradise

Hanif told me about his intention in visiting this village.
He and his five companions joined in a team of UGM students who currently engage in a Community Development Program (CDP). This program requires the students to be willing to move and conducting projects in one of remote districts in the country. And Hanif's team got the allocation in here.

Around 4 months ahead, they are in charge to implement some social contribution programs for the locals. Also include to explore and to promote tourism potentials around the village.

One of their contributions is a program to build wooden cattle pens within each sub district. So hopefully there will be no more cattle strolling, and will definitely clear from scattered "landmines" on the street.

We are free, human!

Don't you dare disturb us!

Here's our present for you, human!

There will be several other duties ahead, even though CDP team just arrived few days ago.
So the point is, they have to provide counseling service to the locals about the essential of tourism sector for their economic future. Since Biduk-Biduk has potential in its very unique and beautiful nature.

There might be a high increase in tourist numbers who will come to this place in the future. So they have to get into preparation for the amenities, including the clean appearance.

Upon arriving at Sulaiman Bay, we were headed straight to the wooden jetty to look for signals. It felt really quiet along the village, however the bay seemed rather crowded that afternoon. Some people were looked busy transporting daily commodities which imported by ships from Sulawesi.

At the corner of the coast, there's a monitoring post that guarded by TNI (Indonesian National Armed Forces) who always inspecting the goods distribution. Since Biduk-Biduk is one of the corner most places, it can possibly become a good place for certain people to execute illegal activities.

It was quite crowded, but still peaceful. Nothing can beat the coastal landscape at sunset in the late afternoon. Warm and tranquil. This was the perfect nature atmosphere that I had longed for.

Cukup ramai, namun masih terasa asri.

Jetty at Sulaiman bay
Sulaiman Bay jetty. This place believed as the right spot to search for better phone signals

Local's boat in Sulaiman bay
Fishermen's boats

However my phone still didn't receive any signals. There was only one provider that apparently got quite stable signal even in the remotest area, and I believe you certainly know the brand name (no advert). Luckily, Hanif was using that phone card at the time. So I borrowed his phone for a while in order to reach my family at home.

Actually, Biduk-Biduk charms are not limited to Sulaiman Bay only. From the jetty where I stood here, you can go across the sea to visit Kaniungan Island and Sumbang Bay by chartering locals' motorboat. In both islands there are beautiful beaches and also some untouched waterfalls.

Only 3 days were certainly not enough for me to explore everything here. Charm of marine life diversity around the bay is exceptionally rich. There is also a sailing ship building tradition by the locals which the entire process is done traditionally. Unfortunately, I missed both of them due to time limit.

Hanif and companions just arrived in this village few days ago. They also still had no chance to explore around yet. That's why he looked so excited once he found out my plan to visit Labuan Cermin Lake tomorrow.

"Woah, we also have yet to visit that place, bro George. Please, contact us in the first place if you want to go there! Since we just arrived here few days ago, so recent activities are only about introduction. We got quite spare time, no any particular jobs for us by now," told Hanif.

"So please come by.. pay visits to our place. Right there at that multifunction office," while he pointing to a village office looked-like building.

"Alright, Nif! I do want to go there by tomorrow morning," I nodded as a promise.

Unlike me who was mere dropped in for 2-3 days only. Hanif and companions would stay here for few months, which made them had enough time to make friends with the people, learn the local's culture, and deliver positive contribution to this village.

I imagine in the future, Sulaiman Bay dan Biduk-Biduk will certainly become the province's main tourism, besides Derawan Islands. I do believe if their presence here will bring significant change to this beautiful village.

Early morning in Biduk-Biduk

By learning about the role which carried by the CDP group in here, now I fully comprehend the true meaning for the word of TRAVEL is.

In my opinion, that matter actually doesn't apply to travel (tourism) field only. Either any occupation fields or any social status we come from, we should take some parts in social contribution. I believe each of us certainly has our own proficiency in a particular field respectively, don't we?
That's one of our main roles as human being and also as a part of life society.

Then how about me?
Honestly, I couldn't yet do as much as the group do at the time. I felt my status as a mere tourist was seem meaningless. Even so, I could still apply my skill as a travel photographer.

By sharing these photo works and the article, I expect more people will notice the beauty of Biduk-Biduk. At least, the increase number of visitors will definitely boost the local economy via tourism. And to expected, the locals also will be more aware about the importance of preserving their environment for the sake of their future life.

Because the future of civilization and nature is our responsibility.

Anyway, I learned a great statement from a certain website just before I posted this article. Worth to share.

"Don’t just travel to the obvious places.
Travel to the tough places.
Travel to learn.
Travel to discover.
Travel to the places that will challenge

who you think you want to be"

[Road Less Traveled] Biduk-Biduk: Borneo's Nose Tip Paradise

[Road Less Traveled]
Biduk-Biduk: Pesona Desa Pesisir di "Ujung Hidung" Kalimantan

Early morning view just across from where I stay

The female receptionist looked a bit shocked and surprised when she looked at me. She smiled friendly shortly after and welcomed me in her pinky hostel. Then she explained about her confused that it's such once in a while to have a guest in these hours, around 3 p.m.

Pinky atmosphere

About 5 hours of "pretty fun" road trip by car from Tanjung Redeb (Berau) town was really exhausting my body. But somehow, that fatigue was just simply passed away when I arrived at the hostel. It's located on a beautiful spot which made me to choose this hostel for two days ahead. The terrace facing directly to the coastal and wide blue sea.

Situated on the East Borneo coast, Biduk-Biduk village is located at the nose tip or almost close to the easternmost point of Borneo island (Indonesia). This village already has its own main street with asphalt pavement, which extends about 10 km to the end of the road at Sulaiman Bay.

Even Gmaps is unable to show the road direction. So, I draw a straight imaginary line

It was very quiet at the hostel that afternoon. Receptionist, also the owner informed me that there were already 2 rooms occupied since 2 days ago. However, until my last day here, I didn't get to catch their appearance. Curious and excited really forced me to explore around in no time. Once check-in, taking a bath and tidying up, then hit the road. No wasting time.

Biduk-Biduk village isn't similar to ordinary villages out there, which the settlements are scattered on several streets/alleys/blocks. There's only 1 main long road next to the coastline, so most of local's houses are located and facing toward the sea.

Rasa penasaran sekaligus excited membuat saya ingin segera menjelajah lingkungan sekitar. Tak perlulah berlama-lama di penginapan. Begitu check-in, mandi dan beres-beres, langsung jalan keluar.

Biduk-Biduk coastline road

Modest gazebos just across the Selvia Hostel

No hell I would roam along the road from end to tend (around 10 km) just by on foot. So, the first duty to be done surely looking for a vehicle rental. In just short time, I was able to get a borrowed motorbike from the receptionist.

Didn't know the reason, probably because I was just alone at the time. Because most of tourists usually come in a group with their rented car to roam around. Anyway, yes I got a borrowed bike... and no need to worry about the fees. What a luck!

I drove along the Biduk-Biduk coastline without setting any exact location. I was just driving slowly while enjoying the fresh breeze in late afternoon. Once I saw beautiful objects or view, I stopped and parked the bike then walked to capture some images. And of course without forgetting to always say "hi" to the locals when met them.

Ya, benar dipinjami... alias nggak perlu pusingin biaya sewa lagi. What a luck!

A local family

Also a local activity

The sky looked clear and blue that afternoon, and the weather also was not too hot. What a perfect moment for photographers! From all directions, this beach looks picturesque that worth captured into some pictures.

The tide was still low opened a way for me to keep walking far enough from the shore toward the shallow water. Some parts were surely shallow, but there're also some parts which must passing through an almost knee-deep water surface. The motive was surely for capturing some unique objects, like these "lonely tree" below.

While I was capturing the scenery, I suddenly remembered one matter that I had to do immediately. The problem is, I couldn't just do it around here, but I had to find the right location so that can be done easily.

I needed mobile phone signal in order to tell the family about my current state. I had been "lost" for several days in Borneo since then, that could make them worry. However, since yesterday my phone screen always showed "Emergency calls only" text.

After asking the locals, I had to head to Sulaiman Bay which situated at the end of village road. Because only at this very location the phone signal can be worked good enough. But not means all providers were able to get the signal, including my phone. Without any clear directions, I still had to head there.

Even a brief encounter with the locals could be interesting. For example, some of them looked surprised and somehow excited when they found out that I was a tourist from outer land. They would enthusiastically tell me about the beautiful spots around the village. One of them is a man who willingly paused his activity to have a chat with me. I just "say hi" and asking for direction to the bay, tho!

While we're talking, suddenly a young man joined our convo. I guessed he was a local guy here. Can be seen from the daily outfit he wore, and he already acquainted with the man before.
But later he revealed that he also a foreigner from Jogja.
Hanif, he said the name while he was also asking me back.

"You got a borrowed bike! Anyway, which place you're heading to?" Hanif asked.

Once he learned that I was heading to the bay, he suddenly said, "So do I.. I'm looking for signals to reach my family. Anyway, would you mind to share a ride?"
I guessed it wasn't a big deal at all, since we were in the same boat.

"Summer Blue"

Maybe you are all wondering why I traveled so far away to Borneo (corner most by the way!) Even though Java is also abundant in pristine beaches.

Yes, exactly! You're not fully wrong anyway.
But of course I had reason why I visited this place.
Because there is a picturesque, unique, and surely rare natural site in this very place. The name is Labuan Cermin Lake. What unique? I'll tell it later for the next story.

Keunikannya apa? Nanti akan saya ceritakan di cerita berikutnya.

Enchanting sunrise
Sunrise at the easternmost Borneo (Indonesia)

Sunrise at the hut
Enjoying the serene moment

Witness the sun rises from the horizon, breathe in some fresh air, and feel the rural atmosphere in tranquil are the most perfect combination for a city dweller like me. It may seem very simple, but we need to go out from our urban routines which sometimes make you feel terribly sick and bored.

Get out from the "box", start to appreciate everything what nature has given to us, and the most important is to find the meaning of slow-living life.

Hokkaido "The Winter Wonderland": Northernmost Island Through the Lens

After a long time enough this blog was abandoned without any new posts, now I feel quite relieved because in this post I able to announce the latest news about a project that I'm working on recently. Maybe some of you have read the articles in this blog which tell my journey in Hokkaido during winter. Some of them were curious and wondered every things about the island which located in the northernmost of Japan.

Started from: which destinations we will visit to; what we can find; what activities that we can do; how cold is in there; how thick the snow it has; and many more. As if the island is still holding tons of enticing mysteries in there which is not widely known.

The fact says so. Hokkaido seems rarely seen and appeared in any medias as well, especially outside of Japan. Therefore, I along with @reinhardreren was creating a project to introduce some of Hokkaido's destinations. So let's discuss it! (QA)

Yuk, langsung bahas projeknya! (QA)

Q: What's the project about?

A: We intend to introduce famous Hokkaido destinations through some pictures that we have captured during the trip in winter. The photos are released into a photobook named Hokkaido "The Winter Wonderland".

Q: Why must Hokkaido?

A: We believe Japan tourism isn't always centered for culture trends in Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka as it has been well-known by many people. There are so many spots are still need to be uncovered since each region has their own specialities.

Hokkaido boasts a great sight of unspoiled paradise and natural landscapes that will awaken your curiosity mind to learn more about the island. The main purpose is to promote Hokkaido charms to everyone in southern hemisphere.

Q: More details about Hokkaido "The Winter Wonderland" photobook?

A: Yes, it's photobook. Not detailed travel guide book, nor how to- book.
The book is about 110 content pages with hundreds pictures of Hokkaido's attraction. Photos are natural landscapes, winter activities, winter events, travel destinations, culinary, animals, portraits, human interests, random shots, and many more. Divided into 5 chapters, each shows selected pictures from each city/region.

Q: Penjelasan selebihnya tentang photobook Hokkaido "The Winter Wonderland"?

A: Ya, ini photobook. Bukan buku rincian panduan perjalanan, dan bukan pula buku how to-.

Q: Is this book contains only photos?

A: This is photography book, so it's full of photos. But in some pages, there are brief words of poetic sentence which explains the excitement and incredible experience that everyone can get when visiting Hokkaido in winter. There are also brief paragraphs of general knowledge about the destination in every chapters.
All words are written in 2 languages: English and Japanese.

Q: Why the cover page is so plain? Any reason of concept for this?

A: You know that picture is essential in photobook. But we don't want just an ordinary scenery picture for the cover page. So we decided to choose 1 photo that depicts tourists' interest against the nature. You can see the result at pictures above. As if the tourists impressed to the surrounding environment as they watching the amazing packs of drift ice. The tilted horizon line also adds unique impression of the photo.

For the design concept, we adapted the Japanese style. Simple, clean, and elegant. So that's why we put only a few design elements (logo and title) at the corners in order not to distract the main photo of cover page.

Q: Apakah buku ini cuma berisi foto-foto aja?

A: Ini buku fotografi, jadi tentu aja dipenuhi banyak foto.

Q: Kenapa sampulnya kelihatan polos banget?

Q: Japanese style, so what makes it different with the others?

A: As you can see the picture above, we keep the layout design in simplicity. The pages look neat and elegant. The reader's view will be more focus to the photos without any distractions around. To make it more unique, the photo layout created differently for every pages.

We also apply the Japanese photography style into our photos.
If you know Kinfolk, @shinichi38, jt.333, emi_nosuke, and other Japanese Instagrammers, so it means you might be familiar with the mood and tone of all photos in this photobook. We chose this kind of tone because it suits to the book design and theme. Bright and soft. Looks classic and calming-eyes. Non-high contrast but still looks beautiful aesthetically.

Q: I'm really interested, how can I get it?

A: Yes, this book has been released and sold. For the time being, the photobook are produced independently (self-publishing or indie). In other words, Hokkaido "The Winter Wonderland" is still not available in any major bookstores at the moment.
But of course, in the future we plan to publish it with major book publisher.

If you interested to have one (or more), you can still order the photobook by contacting us.

Q: Why should I buy?

A: A book which depicts about Hokkaido tourism in English is rarely to be seen. You may ask Google, then you will get some novels or guide books, but a little number of photobooks. So Hokkaido "The Winter Wonderland" could be the one of the first photography book about Hokkaido tourism that ever published.

Of course we do realize that this book is not widely published (self-published). So we're still working on it so that Hokkaido will be more recognized by everyone.
